A Taekwondo uniform, also known as a dobok, is worn by practitioners of this Korean Martial Art. It consists of pants, a plain, white, and V-neck heavy cotton top similar to a jacket and tied together by a belt to close. In Taekwondo, everyone wears the same uniform during practice. The only difference between Student’s uniform is the color of the belt.

Taekwondo Belt

In Martial Arts Students are honored with belts and ranks for being disciplined, skilled, and dedicated to their art. The color of the Taekwondo belt signifies a certain level of competence in the art achieved by the holder. Grades start from white for the beginners and advance to yellow, green, blue, and red, with the highest being black.

Belt colors are not standardized and can vary from school to school. Each belt color in Taekwondo correlates with the GUP (rank) of the Student. The term GUP (sometimes spelled Geup) means degree. When moving from school to school, the GUP will let the new Instructor know the level achieved.

At the Black Belt level, the term DAN (meaning phase and pronounced dahn) replaces GUP as rank indicator. There are nine DAN degrees, starting with the first. All DAN degrees are represented by a Black Belt. Embroidered stripes, generally in gold, indicate the black belt degree achieved by the holder.

Belt Ranks at Lions Taekwondo Academy

*To indicate intermediate steps towards the degree of the Black Belt, some schools (including Lions Taekwondo Academy) add tape stripes at the end of the belt when the following skills are mastered.

Every 3 months, our Lions Taekwondo Academy has a Belt Test and Students have the opportunity to increase their belt rank. Students who, according to the Master, have learned all the necessary knowledge and are ready to show their skills, are allowed to take the exam.

How To Wash A Taekwondo Uniform and Belt?

We would like to draw your attention to the fact that the Taekwondo uniform is for Academy training only. It does not allow dinners, walking and other leisure activities that are not related to the learning process of Taekwondo. The main rule is to always show respect for the uniform and your belt.

Not a lot of Students know this fact, but it is important to pay your attention to taking care of your Taekwondo suit in the right way. We do not recommend you wash your uniform and belt in a washing machine often because that might shrink the material or ruin the belt and loosen the stripes earned.

For the belt it is better to wash it in cold water manually. Fill your sink up with cold water, add some vinegar to help kill germs as well as foul smells, and a little bit of detergent. Gently scrub your Taekwondo uniform and belt, clean and air-dry it.  If you don’t want to hand-wash these items, consider running them through a cold wash on the gentle cycle instead. Use the delicates laundry detergent and don’t forget to turn the uniform inside out.
