In Martial Arts, a belt indicates the level of training (rank), knowledge about your practice, and progress towards future individual personal growth. There are many ways to tie your Taekwondo belt, but a traditional Taekwondo tie is two of the most basic. Here is a simple guide to learning how to tie a Taekwondo belt properly.
Method 1 – Double Wrap Belt
Step 1
With your both hands, place it flat against your belly. While continuing to hold on to the end with the right hand, use your left hand to wrap the belt around your waist twice counterclockwise (make sure the belt does not twist while wrapping).
Step 2
With one side of the belt in each hand, create tension as you pull each side of the belt back. Feed each side into the opposite hand so the belt crosses once in the back.
Step 3
At your navel, take the end of the top belt and tuck it under (from bottom to top) all layers of wrapped belt around your waist. Next, pull the end of the belt and out from under the layers of the wrapped belt.
Step 4
You should now have a crossed area at your navel. Extend both ends in front of you to make sure they are even. If they are not even, adjust the belt so that the ends are even and the crossing is at your navel. Pull the belt in your right hand up through the loop and grab the belt on top of the crossed belt ends in your left hand. Pull both ends of the belt to tighten the knot.
Method 2 – Easy Double Wrap Belt for Kids
Step 1
Take the belt and start, putting the beginning of the belt on your knee. Fold the belt in half. Fix this position with your right hand.
Step 2
Keep fixing one part of the belt with the left hand, take the other part of the belt with the right hand and wrap the belt around your child a few times until you can bring both ends to the front. When both ends are in front, they should be the same length. Otherwise, adjust it.
Step 3
At your belly button, pull the left side of the belt underneath both layers and pull it out the top. Pull gently up on it at the same time you pull down on the other side so that the belt is tightening around the waist.
Step 4
One more time. From there, loop it with the right hand through and then grab both ends of the belt and pull on it.
The Taekwondo Belt System
The Taekwondo belt system has been around since the 1940s and remains an essential part of the tradition. It acts as an incentive for Taekwondo students to advance to the next level of training.
